Programs and Services - Academic Support

Goals

  • To provide appropriate accommodations and support services.
  • To serve as a resource.
  • To be an advocate for the needs of all students.
  • To assist the institution in interpreting federal and state legislation mandating appropriate accommodations for students with disabilities.
  • To refer students to faculty and offices that provide additional assistance such as personal counseling or career and employment advice.

Academic Support Services

Academic Support Services assist physical and learning disabled students with accommodations to help develop and enhance their student life skills as well as their academic needs. Upon receipt of a request for services and the appropriate documentation, Academic Support Services works with you to provide or establish the most suitable and reasonable accommodations or services.

Accommodations or services have included:

  • Reading assignment on CD/Cassette
  • Assistance with note-taking
  • Tutorial assistance
  • Assistance with the writing process
  • Time management and study skill assistance
  • Assistance with the registration process
  • Referral for counseling at Monsour, Baxter, and/or Career Services
  • Use of computer, spell checker or calculator while testing
  • Extra time to take exams and private testing area

Tutoring Services

Early intervention can costively impact your college experience. Tutoring assistance is provided free of charge to Pitzer students. Peer tutoring is available by appointment on a regular or drop-in basis throughout the academic year. Peer tutors are properly trained to assist students in mastering their areas of difficulty. Students may receive assistance in study techniques, content area reading, note-taking, test-wise strategies, problem-solving and communication skills. Peer tutors are positive, enthusiastic, and sincere about helping their peers.

They are available to assist in several areas such as:

  • Science and Mathematical Fields of Study
  • Psychological and Sociological Statistics
  • Economics and Language Fields of Study

Unique Services

Unique Services provides assistance for obtaining a personal care assistant and transportation for students with physical disabilities.

Personal Care Assistance

Personal care assistants are employed through MJ.S Professional Cleaning Services. MJ.S provides cleaning and laundry services on Monday and Thursday for $50.00 per week. The cost of these services is totally the student's responsibility. MJ.S accepts money orders, personal and/or cashier's checks.

Transportation

Scooterville: provides scooters, jazzy power chairs and all sorts of neat mobility equipment. The cost of these services is totally the student's responsibility.
Saddleback Golf Cars: Provides reasonable weekly and monthly rentals for students with disabilities and students who have been injured and who may need temporary transportation to their off-campus classes.

Student Responsibilities

It is the student's responsibility to:

  • Provide documentation to the Director of Academic Support Services, supporting your physical or learning disability.
  • Meet with the Director of Academic Support Services within the first two weeks of each semester to confirm class schedule and accommodations needed.
  • Notify the Director of Academic Support Services of any changes made in your schedule during the semester to ensure requested accommodations are received in all needed courses.
  • Discuss with each of your professors appropriate accommodations needed for successfully completing each class you are attending.
  • When written exams are to be proctored by the Academic Support Services Office, notify the Director of Academic Support Services and your professor two weeks before the exam, so appropriate supervision and proper room arrangements can be made to produce a distraction-free environment.
