2008 Orientation Adventure

Trip Descriptions

1. Kings Canyon Jennie Lakes Backpack
The Sequoia National Forest and Giant Sequoia National Monument are named for the world’s tallest tree. Majestic granite monoliths, glacier-torn canyons, mountain lakes, and lush meadows provide the ideal backdrop for a legendary hiking experience. The trip will explore the Jennie Lakes Wilderness Area, and backpackers will have the opportunity to enjoy miles of scenery at several destinations and enjoy the view from 9,000 feet up in the High Sierras. Our longest-running excursion and the quintessential Pitzer Outdoor Adventures (POA) hike.

2. Coastal Bike Cruise
Is it possible to explore the zenith of Car culture without a car? Do you enjoy biking mountains, and beaches? This trip will tour the San Gabriel River Trail from the Inland Empire to the Pacific Ocean and then proceed south along the coast. While terrain covered will be primarily flat or downhill, students selecting this trip should be confident of their ability to cover extended distances on a bike. Please feel free to bring your own bike if you have one, otherwise equipment will be provided by our Green Bike Program.

3. Southern California Arts and Pop Culture
Do you want to know more about the wonderful cultural resources LA has to offer? Do you love music, art, sporting events, or public parks? This trip will visit Los Angeles museums, attend concerts, and more. Get a taste of the city that has so much to offer as you learn about the interests of your new-found friends and learn ways to navigate the rich area that surrounds Pitzer College.

4. Sustainability in Action
Are you interested in learning about local farms and gardens that actively work towards sustainability and community involvement? Then this trip is right for you. The trip will involve work in local gardens and farms, tours of LA County community gardens, an introduction to the Claremont farmers market and the farmers involved, excursions to Mt. Baldy and the nearby coast, and communal meals from locally harvested food.

5. Arts and Activism in LA
Activists and aspiring organizers! Located in Los Angeles County, Pitzer College embraces local activism for global change. Participants in this trip with learn about critical issues and are exposed to cultural opportunities right in our very own back yard! Activities will cover important issues facing the LA area such as environmental degradation, gang culture, urban art, and community building through hands-on field visits to the LA River, museums, community centers, and neighborhood tours.

6. Southern California Surf
Whether you are an experienced surfer or it’s something you have always wanted to try, this trip gives you the opportunity to camp and enjoy the break at Southern California’s legendary San Onofre Beach. Professional instruction, along with boards and wetsuits will be provided.
