Three Juniors Awarded Scholarships to Europe for Summer Study
Three stellar juniors at Pitzer College have been awarded paid scholarships/ internships to Europe this summer by the European Union Center of California.
Alexandra Carswell Engle will intern at the Assembly of European Regions in Strasbourg, France.
Samuel Jubelirer will intern at the U.S. Mission to NATO in Brussels, Belgium. The internship accepts about 10-12 college students from around the United States each summer.
|Yigit Canay will attend the University of Rome/Tor Vergata's summer program in Rome and Sienna.|
Self-Designed Major: Global Relations (International Relations involving history, politics, and economics)
I hope to gain practical experience working in a political organization, as well as language practice and knowledge of the functioning of inter-European affairs, in particular regional policy and development within the great EU. Additionally, I will get to discover a new city for me, Strasbourg, in the famous Alsace region.
Next year I will be studying abroad in Morocco on a Pitzer exchange while studying Arabic. I plan to apply for a Fulbright to either a South American country or perhaps pursue a masters degree program in Public Health.
My activities at Pitzer include the Swim and Dive team, Triathlon Club, International Place, Global Friendship Alliance, Peace Rally Planning, Student Investment Committee, Model UN, and Model EU.
I have studied abroad in Spain, Costa Rica, France, and Japan; I speak Spanish, French and Japanese.
This is an amazing opportunity, and I am so grateful for the EU Center at Scripps!
Major: Political Economy
I hope to gain a better understanding of and firsthand experience with a crucial and historically important area of both American and European foreign policy, along with an interesting perspective for law school on the practice of international agreements and legal regimes.
I plan on attending law school in the fall of 2009.
My activities at Pitzer include being a Student Senator, a Student representative on the Faculty Executive Committee, and a Student representative on the Political Studies field group.
I am very grateful to Pitzer, and specifically my advisor Tom Ilgen, and to Professor David Andrews at the European Union Center of California at Scripps College for supporting me in pursuing this opportunity.
Major: International Relations at Middle East Technical University, Turkey, and a 2007-2008 Pitzer College exchange student
I will be attending summer school in University of Rome Tor Vergata. The Program is called Jean Monnet Summer Session. I'll be taking courses on European Integration with prominent EU scholars lecturers from US, Europe and Australia.
I am hoping to learn the EU policy making process from EU experts and obtain a greater understanding of EU politics and EU's future direction. I am sure the program will be a fascinating opportunity to meet with senior level EU officials, academics and students.
I am hoping to come back to US for a graduate degree in International Affairs. I come from a family of diplomats and senior bureaucrats and am pursuing a carrier in foreign service. I am a native Turkish speaker and am proficient in French at the intermediate level.
I was a part of the Pitzer Model United Nations Team that visited the Harvard MUN 2008 conference in Boston with Professor Tom Ilgen.
I was awarded this fellowship because of my success at the Undergraduate Research Conference on Europe which was organized by EU Center of California. I knew that my European-Russian Relations research and paper presentation was solid, but I wasn't expecting this award. Being recognized for my work further motivated me to pursue a deeper study in the area of European Foreign Relations.
