Eight Pitzer Seniors and One Alumnus Awarded Fulbright Fellows for 2008-09

Eight Pitzer College seniors and one alumunus have been awarded Fulbright Fellowships for the 2008-2009 academic year: Betty Avila, Dan Chinburg, Matt Kane, Courtney Moffett-Batteau, Rachel Rubin, Lan Nguyen, Mauricio Pantoja, Zoe Unruh and Nick Zanjani '06.

Betty Avila has been awarded a Fulbright Fellowship. Betty Avila, a double major in Spanish and English and World Literature will be teaching in South Korea. Betty studied abroad on the Pitzer in Italy program.

   

Dan Chinburg, majoring in English & World Literature, will be traveling to South Korea on a teaching fellowship. Dan studied abroad on the Pitzer in Ecuador program.



   

Matt Kane, a mathematics and political science major, will be teaching in South Korea. Matt studied abroad on the Pitzer in Botswana program.

   
Courtney Moffett-Batteau, whose major is Philosophy and Black Studies, will be on a Fulbright teaching fellowship in Germany. While at Pitzer, Courtney studied abroad in Germany.
   

Lan Nguyen, a Sociology and Asian American Studies major, will spend the year in Andorra on a teaching fellowship. Lan studied abroad on the Costa Rica summer health program and the Pitzer in Ecuador program.

   

Rachel Rubin, who majors in Organizational Studies and minors in French, will spend her Fulbright year in Morocco researching her project, “A Better Life in Al Medina al Hamra: Tourism, Education and Poverty in Marrakech.” Rachel studied abroad in France on a non-Pitzer program.

   

Mauricio Pantoja has been awarded a 2008-2009 Fulbright Fellowship to Becario Fulbright-García Robles del Programa de Negocios Binacionales Generación—the first Fulbright a Pitzer student has ever been awarded to study in Mexico. Mauricio, a double major in Political Studies and Economics, will complete an internship in international business while taking graduate-level coursework. Mauricio studied abroad on the Pitzer in Italy program.

   

Zoe Unruh, an international relations and development major, received her Fulbright Fellowship to teach in Turkey. Zoe studied abroad on the Pitzer in Botswana program.

   

Pitzer alum Nick Zanjani, class of 2006, has been awarded a Fulbright Fellowship to Cyprus. During his Fellowship year, Nick will be focused on his proposal “Prefacing Peace: Identifying Obstacles to Coexistence in Nicosia.”
