Delaine Ureno '09 Awarded Competitive Art Internship in New Mexico
False Start: A Good Beginning

Delanie Ureno
Delanie Ureno '09 has been awarded an art internship at Site Biennial in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

This summer Delaine Ureno, an art history major at Pitzer College, will spend seven weeks at the Site Santa Fe Biennial in New Mexico.

"The Site Biennial is a major international contemporary art exhibition, and Delaine will be working closely with an artist to help him or her realize a project for the show," Professor Bill Anthes explained.

"Professor Anthes has been an amazing advisor. He emails me about possible about art internships and lets me know about the opportunities out there for people in the art field," Delaine said.

While at Pitzer, Delaine has been involved in the downtown Los Angeles and Pomona art scenes. She has enjoyed working at the dA Center for the Arts in Pomona, a diverse, multi-discipline, non-profit organization. With an expressed interest in contemporary art, Delaine believes that it is an approachable art genre and not only for the elite as some believe. "Contemporary art is a great vehicle to bring out issues of social responsibility," she said.

What does a "False Start" have to do with Delaine? "When I was very little, my grandfather showed me a modern art painting by Jasper Johns that was painted in 1959 titled "False Start." I told him it was stupid. I did not like it at all and did not think it was good. He told me to take another look and not to be judgmental. I often think back to this discussion and realize how right he was about art and perception," Delaine explained.

"I see myself as more of a creative person and not as an artist. I hope to some day pursue a curator position at a major contemporary art institute such as MOCA," she concluded.

In addition to studying art history, she has produced paintings, sculptures and photography. To see Delaine's portfolio, visit www.delaineureno.com
