“Caron leads Sagehens to win in overtime”

CLAREMONT - Pomona-Pitzer quarterback Jake Caron snuck into the end zone from four yards out in the first overtime period to give the Sagehens a hard-fought 26-20 victory over visiting LaVerne in Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play on Saturday.

The touchdown followed a blocked 24-yard field-goal attempt by the Leopards, who failed to get into the end zone on their overtime possession.

The Sagehens attempted to set up field-goal kicker Thomas Fenster in the middle of the field for an easier attempt when Caron was able to sneak through the line and reach across the goal line for the score.

Fenster missed two short field-goal attempts.

The Leopards, who were shut down for most of the second half, overcame a 10-point fourth deficit, thanks to two big plays from Chris Handy. Handy took a fourth-down pass from Troy Doolittle and raced 39 yards to the 8-yard line, setting up Taylor Hart with the game-tying field goal with 2:32 left.

• Quarterback Jacob Caron ’11 was an efficient 11-12 for 114 yards to go along with thirty-two yards rushing.
