Home is Where the Heart and Art is for Katy Carrow '07

Katy CarrowDepending on your current age, at five you might have tuned in to Sesame Street, Bozo Circus, Howdy Doody or the Teletubbies; however, Katy Carrow '07 rushed home from kindergarten to watch The Christopher Lowell Show on the Home and Garden channel.

Katy explains the rationale behind her interior design senior art show: "At the age of thirteen my favorite magazine was Architectural Digest. In high school I would ask my boyfriend to take me to Ikea instead of the movies. All of my life I have loved interior design. I obsess over fabric and dishes. I go crazy with joy in a furniture store, and I stay up at night envisioning my future home. Thus, when the time came for me to choose a theme for my senior art show, it only seemed appropriate that I would do what I love and feel passionate about—interior design!"

Katy's amazing senior art show was located on the campus of Pitzer College in the Hinshaw Gallery at the Grove House during spring semester. "The design of the room was influenced by my life experiences—most recently my travels abroad in Southern Africa. I was fortunate to work alongside many talented artists in Botswana and thus several of the pieces in this room are dear to me as they symbolize my home abroad with my host families and the many friendships I developed there."

No stranger to Pitzer College, Katy's sister Amber graduated from Pitzer in 2003 and now teaches junior high in nearby Upland. Katy added, "I chose Pitzer because I felt this was a place where I could be expressive and where I could flourish. I felt valued and appreciated here and that the importance I place on volunteerism would be considered as important as my strengths in the classroom."

Katy's Room"Visiting Assistant Professor of Photography Thomas Cahill was very supportive and encouraging of my work," Katy added.

One of the attendees of the art show commented that this was one of the best art shows he had ever seen in his more than twenty years on campus.

While at Pitzer, Katy was a member of the Art Collective, Pitzer Outdoor Activities, the Women's Center and the Five College Peace Coalition. She majored in studio art and sociology and plans to pursue a master's degree in interior design.
