Men's Club Volleyball Team Qualifies for Nationals

Club Volleyball Team
L-R: Joshua Lo '09, Benjamin White '08, Carter Rubin '09, and Drew Lowell-Brit '08.

Right out of the gate, The Claremont Colleges men's volleyball team, the Coyotes, made a name for itself in its first year on the circuit. Four Pitzer College students participated on this year's team: Carter Rubin '09, Drew Lowell-Brit '08, Benjamin White '08 and Joshua Lo '09. Lowell-Brit and White served as team co-captains.

Louisville, Kentucky was home to the NIRSA (National Intramural-Recreational Sports Association national playoffs). The Claremont Colleges team finished in fifth place out of forty-eight Division II teams. " We finished 4-1 in pool play and qualified for the Championship "Gold Bracket." We have a good chance of winning first place next year; we lost by only two points in the last two games," Rubin said. Both Lowell-Brit and White were given Honorable Mentions for their tournament play.

This year marked the first year in which Pomona-Pitzer, Claremont McKenna, Harvey Mudd Colleges and CGU merged to form the The Claremont Colleges team, which competes in the Northern Division of SCIAC (Southern California Interscholastic Athletic Conference) with UCLA, USC, LMU and UCSB.

All four students played competitively while in high school, although they did not become friends until joining the club sport and going to practices twice a week and playing games on the weekend.

The team will be having an end-of-they-year barbeque on a Saturday (date tba). All are welcome. If interested in purchasing a volleyball t-shirt, contact Carter Rubin at carter_rubin@pitzer.edu.
