Madeleine Scinto ’07 Reporting from on The Hill
Washington D.C. Internship
As a double major in Government and Spanish at Pitzer College, Madeleine Scinto has enjoyed the unique opportunity of interning at The Hill newspaper while on the Claremont McKenna Washington, D.C program this fall in which she has experienced U.S. politics hands-on as she interviews house representatives and senators, reports on congressional press conferences and attends committee meetings and hearings. Her tasks vary from composing a brief on the independent documentary film, “Can Mr. Smith get to Washington?” to covering future House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s press conferences.
Madeleine contends the best part of her job though has been writing bylines for The Hill on a wide range of issues. Many are straight hard news, such as her article on secret Senate holds which landed on the front page of the newspaper within her first few weeks of working there. Madeleine is one of the few interns in the newspaper’s history to have a front page byline. She has also written lighter stories on subjects like the D.C. jazz scene which she enjoys equally if not more.
Next spring Madeleine looks forward to another exciting semester where she will be studying abroad in Leon, Spain on the Pitzer exchange program. Being a Spanish and Government major, Madeleine plans to incorporate her two interests by taking politics courses at the University of Leon. She also plans to continue other activities she participated in at Pitzer such as debate (there is an international debate team), intramural soccer, hiking, skiing and other outdoor recreation.
