Professor Judy Grabiner Wins Mathematics Award
Judy Grabiner, Flora Sanborn Pitzer Professor of Mathematics, received the Lester R. Ford Award on Aug. 4 at the Summer MathFest in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Professor Grabiner is the only individual to have received this award three times. The Lester R. Ford Awards were established in 1964 to recognize authors of articles of expository excellence published in The American Mathematical Monthly or Mathematics Magazine.
Grabiner received the award in recognition of her article, “Newton, Maclaurin, and the Authority of Mathematics,” which appeared in The American Mathematical Monthly, 111 (2004), no. 10, pp. 841-852.
The citation notes, “Grabiner’s carefully documented article provides a lively account of the broad influence of Newton’s work through that of one of his most successful followers. This paper should interest anyone curious about the direct effects of the calculus on all areas of thought.”
