Oceana Lamberto-Egan '05 Named Fulbright Fellow
Oceana Lamberto-Egan '05 will soon be departing for Malaysia as a Fulbright scholar to study a public health care issue. Oceana has researched the state of healthcare in Malaysia and has learned that it boasts one of the best healthcare systems in Southeast Asia. In particular, she will study midwifery in Malaysia as practiced by Malaysian bidans who are included under the title “Registered Midwife” as a result of the Midwives Amendment and Extension Act of 1990. She plans to live and work beside Malaysian midwives during her months in Malaysia and will audit several midwifery courses to better evaluate the medical climate.
Oceana will also enroll in an intensive Malay language course (although English is commonly spoken in the medical community) to better communicate in rural areas where English is not as prevalent. An International and Intercultural Studies major, she traveled to Costa Rica while at Pitzer.
