A Campus Transformed

As a reflection of Pitzer's commitment to sustainability and environmental education, Pitzer is pursuing the highest level of “green” possible for the Residential Life Project, and expects to receive Gold certification under the U.S. Green Building Council's Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) rating system.

Four years ago, a group of dedicated students, faculty, staff, trustees and administrators gathered in the Founders Room in McConnell Center to discuss the College's vision for student housing. Since then, literally thousands of design decisions have been made concerning every conceivable aspect of the Project—ranging from paint color choices, to plant materials for gardens, to sustainable interior furnishings. Students are now living in Atherton, Sanborn, and Pitzer Halls.

Fundraising for the Residential Life Project is also continuing to make strong progress this year, with $19,180,885 million received to date in cash or pledge commitments—exceeding the $18 million goal. During the next few months, the College seeks to complete its fundraising campaign through a number of exciting initiatives.

Among these is the Amphitheater Fund, which will provide for an outdoor amphitheater in honor of Pitzer's Founding Faculty. Led by Pitzer College Trustees Susan Pritzker P'93 and Deborah Deutsch Smith '68, with assistance from Louise Thornton '68, the College is looking to raise $300,000—one-third of which has already been committed. Smith noted, “Pitzer is fortunate to have so many living Founding Faculty still teaching full- and part-time at the College and also actively engaged in the life of the institution. This newly developing section of campus provides us with the chance to honor the Founding Faculty who made such a difference in most of our lives.”
