Master Classes and Special Events
During the 2009-2010 school year, the Writing Center will sponsor a series of master classes taught by professional writers with an interest in mentoring writing students at the Claremont colleges.
A master class is an intense, small group writing workshop. Students who would like to take advantage of these classes should submit a short writing sample, along with the registration form for the class they wish to attend. Submit forms to the Pitzer Writing Center in 131 Mead Hall or to Jackie Levering Sullivan in 225 Scott Hall. Contact Jackie at (909) 607-4535 to learn more about upcoming classes. Participation is limited to 14 students, so register early.
Our first class of Fall semester was taught by Douglas Kearney, an accomplished poet, performer, and librettist. Mr. Kearney's work has been
featured in many fine publications and venues in print, in-the-flesh and
in digital code. His first full-length collection of poems, Fear, Some,
was published in 2006 (Red Hen Press). His second manuscript, The Black
Automaton, was chosen by Catherine Wagner for the National Poetry Series
and will be published by Fence Books in December 2009. In 2008, he was
honored with a Whiting Writers' Award. He lives in the Valley with his
wife and teaches at California Institute of the Arts. For more info, visit

On October 2nd, award-winning poet Brenda Hillman will visit Pitzer campus for a reading in the Nichols Gallery. For more information about Ms. Hillman's work, visit www.blueflowerarts.com.
