"Honestly, it is a little strange to see myself on TV."

Pitzer Student to Appear in PBS Documentary

Last year, Pitzer junior Sarah Lindsay Warden found herself suffering from chronic headaches, and pain in her knee and hip. Pain medications were not helping. Puzzled about her symptoms, Sarah consulted a friend, Carin Zeltzer, who suggested she talk to her mother, Lonnie Zeltzer, the founding doctor of the UCLA Pediatric Pain Clinic. Dr. Zeltzer arranged an appointment with a colleague, Dr. Michael Joseph.

"I was asked many questions, and at the end of the session, I had a quick physical," says Warden, a studio-art major. "Dr. Joseph and the three other specialists stepped out of the room to discuss my diagnosis. The team diagnosed me with Myofascial Pain Syndrome, a syndrome similar to fibromyalgia having to do with random occurrences of pain. They handed me a list of alternative medicine clinicians that I could choose from."

What Warden chose was acupuncture and biofeedback -- a way of measuring tension, heart rate, hand warmth, temperature and sweat gland activity. Not long after beginning treatment, she received a call from Colleen Werner, her biofeedback therapist, informing her that a crew from Lightbridge Productions would be filming her next session at the UCLA clinic.

"The crew was originally going to focus on Michael Waterhouse and his work with pediatric acupuncture," says Warden. "Instead, Dr. Zeltzer suggested that the whole team be interviewed. The next thing I knew I was hooked up to the electrodes and speaking about my experience with the UCLA Pain Team."

This fall, Warden will appear in a 13-part PBS documentary called "The Healing Quest," hosted by Jill Eikenberry and Michael Tucker. The series, which explores alternative healing therapies, will feature Warden as part of an episode that features the UCLA clinic. In it, Warden talks about her life with pain and how biofeedback has helped her. Recently, she got a sneak peek at the episode, and her debut on the small screen.
