The Campaign Trail:
Campaign Coffer Grows

I spent the last week in New York City with two purposes in mind. First, I went there to comfort my daughter, who, while physically safe, was feeling traumatized after witnessing the attacks on the World Trade Center. Sarah watched the tragic events of Sept. 11 unfold from only two blocks away. Her personal distress was exacerbated by the loss of five friends who were trapped in the WTC at the time of the collapse.

The second and more Pitzer-related reason I was in New York was to visit with trustees, alumni and foundation friends to bring them our support and to discuss how the Pitzer community is coping with this national tragedy. As I said at Convocation, the kind of work we do here at Pitzer offers hope for the construction of a much-needed new paradigm - one that will dislodge outmoded world views and demand radical new concepts, maybe even new language. I am extremely proud of the way we link intellectual inquiry with inter-cultural understanding and social change at Pitzer. I am convinced that our graduates will play a central role in constructing the just and peaceful model this country and this world so desperately needs as we struggle to recover from these events and their far-reaching effects.

On a happier note, we continue to make excellent progress toward our goals for The Campaign for Pitzer College. The total amount raised as of Sept. 24 is $24,219,293 - roughly 61 percent of our $40-million goal. Of this total, more than $364,000 has been raised in the past month!  Contributing to this total were significant gifts from the following foundations: The Andrew Mellon Foundation ($164,166), The John Randolph Haynes and Dora Haynes Foundation ($80,000), The Albert Penick Fund ($50,000), The Ahmanson Foundation ($45,000) and The Pitzer Family Foundation ($25,000).

We are extremely grateful for their support!
