IDBS Moves to Pitzer In January, the Intercollegiate Department of Black Studies, chaired by Hal Fairchild, professor of psychology and black studies, moved its headquarters from Scripps to Pitzer. IDBS, now located in Avery 212, incorporates an administrative office, an adjunct research office and the neighboring faculty lounge, which is now reserved for IDBS business.
The mission of IDBS is to rigorously study the histories and cultures of Africans and the African Diaspora. The department examines epistemological and social issues that colleges and universities can't ignore. Moreover, the department endeavors to create an intellectual climate that fosters both self and cross-cultural understanding. IDBS, interdisciplinary in both research and teaching initiatives, promotes collaborative research with other departments and programs at the colleges, as well as with scholars at other institutions. Finally, the Intercollegiate Department of Black Studies coordinates and assists in the recruitment and the retention of Black faculty throughout The Claremont Colleges.
