Fair to Spotlight Pitzer's
Community Programs
Ever wonder what the requisites are for the new master's program in community education? How to apply for the Community-Based Spanish program? What the new Claremont International Studies Education Project is all about? Or what the acronym "CCCSI" stands for?

On Monday, March 5, students, faculty and staff are invited to learn the answers to these and other questions about Pitzer's community outreach programs at "Community Connections: 2001 Pitzer Community Programs Fair."

With so many Pitzer programs designed for community-based education and outreach, a group of Pitzer staff thought it would be useful to educate the entire Pitzer community about the numerous, diverse programs that link Pitzer to our surrounding communities. The fair, created to honor current Pitzer community programs and increase their visibility on campus, will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the Mounds and includes an outdoor lunch catered by Bon Appetit.  (Lunch, by the way, is free, thanks to the generosity of the Office of the President, Student Affairs and the Dean of Faculty's office.)

It is hoped that the fair will encourage students, faculty and staff to seize the opportunities provided by these programs, says Suzanne Foster, an urban fellow at CCCSI and a member of the planning committee for the fair. And, she adds, this fair is unique in that it's all about Pitzer programs.

"This has more of an internal focus: The programs are related to the outside community but are all on this campus," Foster says.

Pitzer community programs invited to participate in this event include:

· Center for California Cultural and Social Issues (CCCSI)
· Claremont International Studies Education Project (CISEP)
· Community-Based Spanish program
· Early Academic Outreach Program (EAOP)
· Jumpstart
· Master's Programs in Community Education (MACET/MACER)
· National Council of Negro Women (NCNW) tutoring programs
· Pitzer in Ontario
· Pitzer Volunteer Group
· Women's Multimedia Center

Representatives from the different groups (including faculty, staff and students) will be on hand to answer questions, discuss ideas and encourage further participation.

"[The Community Programs Fair] has more of an internal focus: The programs are related to the outside community but are all on this campus."
