Three Students Win Rotary Scholarships
Each scholar will receive up to $22,000 toward transportation, tuition, fees, room, board and limited language training while serving as "ambassadors of goodwill" on behalf of their home country and Rotary International. They will do this through their daily interactions while abroad and through formal appearances at Rotary clubs while at home. They also are expected to share their experiences with the clubs in their sponsor district at the end of the scholarship period, remain available for presentations and participation in other Rotary activities, and generally maintain a long-term relationship with the Rotarians who sponsored them.
Ball, a political studies major, will use the Rotary scholarship in 1999-00 to extend the study of Turkish politics he will begin next year as a Fulbright Fellow.
Chernow, a political studies major, intends to study environmental education in New Zealand, focusing on the ecological systems and folk lore of that country.
Johnston, a political economy major who will study the business of international sports in Australia, plans to gain hands-on experience in the field by volunteering for the Olympic games there.

Ben Shepard 92 Records Silent Screams
After graduating from Pitzer in 1992, Benjamin Heim Shepard spent two years working graveyard shifts as a counselor at one of San Franciscos largest AIDS housing programs. On his days off, he recorded the life stories of people with AIDS. The result is "White Nights and Ascending Shadows: An Oral History of the San Francisco AIDS Epidemic," a 320-page book published last October by Cassell Academic.
"White Nights and Ascending Shadows is a montage of life-story interviews with 30 people with AIDS," wrote a reviewer for "Lesbian and Gay Studies." "The power of the work lies in the composition of interviews forming the story of the 70s migration to San Francisco, the election of the nations first openly gay official, his assassination, the onset of a disease and its impact on a city."
"I think the experiences of the first generation of AIDS for people was that we shared the experience of having been a very small group who knew, at the very beginning, that what happened to us would happen to the rest of the world," says Cleve Jones, former Harvey Milk aide and founder of the KS Foundation and Names Project, in Shepards book. "Thats part of it, that terrible frustration of screaming as loud as you can scream and no one can hear you."
Now a resident of Chicago, Shepard is a student at the University of Chicagos School for Social Service Administration. Pitzers Alumni Directory lists him as a social worker for Shanti Project, a San Francisco-based agency that provides culturally sensitive services for people affected by HIV disease. Services include peer support, recreational activities, help with chores, transportation, help with childcare, free movie tickets and help for caregivers.
Lisa Rodriguez Fossum, program administrator for audio visual and instructional technology, is taking a leave of absence Monday through Aug. 17 to continue doctoral studies in education and media. Participants will receive a $400 stipend. For information, e-mail Mueller at tj@shor.net or visit the Mellon calendar at www.mckenna.edu/Mellon/calendar/calendar.html.
