Pitzer College Professor Andre Wakefield publishes new book
Claremont, Calif.(May 15, 2009)— The Disordered Police State, by Pitzer College Associate Professor Andre Wakefield, appeared with the University of Chicago Press in May, 2009. Wakefield teaches history at Pitzer.
The book is grounded in a detailed analysis of German political economy, but Wakefield's study has broader implications for large historical narratives about science, modernization and industrialization. As one reviewer puts it: "Wakefield revises the history of cameralism, he challenges the Enlightenment link between science and material progress and he indicates the limits of the written record for historical enquiry. His conclusions have important implications for economic history, for the history of science and technology and for the writing of history in general" (Pamela Smith, Columbia University).
Wakefield also translated, edited and wrote a scholarly introduction to G. W. Leibniz's Protogaea (Chicago, 2008). He has published over 20 other articles and reviews.
