Configuring Network Settings
If you haven't already done so, connect one end of your category 5 network cable into your Ethernet card and the other end into the data port (marked A or C) on the wall plate in your room. If you plug into the data ports marked B or D it is possible that the data connection will fail because many of these ports have not been activated. Most default installations of Windows XP Home Edition will connect successfully to the Pitzer network without any further configuration. However, if you are unable to attach to the Internet the following steps will assist you in configuring your network settings.
-
Click the Start button and select Control Panel to open it.
-
Under Pick a category, open Network and Internet Connections.
-
Select Network Connections under pick a Control Panel icon.
- Right-click Local Area Connection and select Properties from the menu. The Local Area Connections dialog box will display (Figure 1).

- Verify that the following components are installed in the Local Area Connection Properties dialog box.
- Name of your Ethernet Card in the Connect Using box
- Client for Microsoft Networks
- Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)
- In the Local Area Connection Properties dialog box select Obtain DNS server address automatically (Figure 2).

- Finally, click OK in the open dialog boxes to apply the changes.
You are now ready to connect to the Internet. Verify that your settings are correct by starting your browser and try connecting to different web sites. If you have any problems or questions concerning the configuration settings, please send an Online Help Request to Resnet or call ext. 77548 and push "2" to leave a message with your name, room number, phone extension, and a brief description of the problem and a Resnet technician will get back to you in the order that your call was received.
