Claremont, Calif. (February 10, 2014) This week in Sagehens Athletics saw the Women’s Water Polo team improve to 6-2 on the young season with a pair of dramatic wins at the Cal Baptist Lancer Invite, while the Baseball team took two of three from CMS to win its first SCIAC series of the year.

Women’s Water Polo continued its strong start to the 2014 season by winning its final three matches of the weekend after falling to Cal Baptist in the opener. The Sagehens edged Azusa Pacific 11-10 on Friday on a tiebreaking goal from Sarah Westcott PO ’15, then defeated Fresno Pacific 10-6 on Saturday after pulling away late, and edged SCIAC rival Redlands in a non-league match 9-8 in overtime. Hope Grant ’17 and Alyssa Woodward ’15 scored the two goals in overtime for the Sagehens, while Ahsha Earwood ’17 made her tenth save of the match to preserve the one-goal win. Woodward finished with 15 goals in the four matches, including five in the win over Redlands.

Women’s Lacrosse started out the week with an 11-9 home win over CMS, as Jana London ’14 scored four goals. The Sagehens have now won three of the last four against the Athenas, including two of three a year ago (both in overtime). The win set up a matchup at Occidental on Saturday between two teams tied for first at 2-0 in the SCIAC, and the Tigers prevailed with a narrow 8-7 win in overtime. London had two more goals in that contest to extend her total to a team-high 10. The Sagehens travel to Chapman on Wednesday this week, before hosting defending SCIAC champion Redlands on Saturday.

Jackson Badger ’14 homered and doubled in the rubber game of a SCIAC-opening series with CMS, helping the Sagehens to a 5-3 win.

Baseball opened its SCIAC season with a three-game set against CMS and took two out of three, with all three games closely contested. The Sagehens won the first game at CMS 4-3, as Ernest (E.J.) Lopez ’15 played in his first game of the year after missing opening weekend with an injury and batted 3-for-4 with a homer and three RBI. After the Stags won the first of two at Alumni Field 11-7 in 10 innings on Saturday, the Sagehens took the nightcap 5-3 to win the series. Jackson Badger ’14 homered and doubled in the nightcap, hitting a solo shot to cut an early CMS lead to 2-1 and then doubling and scoring the go-ahead run that put his team ahead to stay. Lopez added a clutch two-out RBI single in the eighth to provide an insurance run and make the score 5-3. The Sagehens host defending SCIAC champion Cal Lutheran on Friday and a non-league game with George Fox on Sunday.

Both basketball teams dropped road games at Chapman, with Men’s Basketball suffering a tough 55-49 loss and Women’s Basketball battling the first-place Panthers close for most of the game before falling 73-64. Both teams travel to La Verne mid-week before hosting Occidental in a doubleheader on Saturday to close out the regular season, which will also be Senior Day for the Men’s Basketball team, with Xavyr Moss ’14 among those honored pregame (the Women’s Basketball team has no seniors this year). Men’s and Women’s Swimming and Diving will also close out the regular season this weekend at the SCIAC Championships in Commerce, California, hosted by Caltech.

Softball dropped a doubleheader to undefeated Cal Lutheran on Saturday, falling in the opener 5-2 and then dropping the nightcap 6-5 in the bottom of the seventh. Ashley Morello ’15 continued her torrid hitting this season by batting 2-for-3 in the opener and 2-for-4 in the nightcap, as  she improved to .522 at the plate on the year.

Men’s Golf opened its season on Monday at the SCIAC Preview, with Jordan Cox ’16 tying for fifth with a 73 to lead the Sagehens to a fourth-place finish out of six teams. Cox was tied for fourth among players participating in the team competition with the second-best round of his young career (he shot a 70 at the West Cup last season).

Track and Field opened the 2014 season by hosting its annual All Comers Meet. Paul Messana ’17 was second in the 1000 meters for the men, and Alex Oxborough-Yankus ’14 was fourth in the hammer throw for the women. The tennis teams will get their seasons started this week, with Men’s Tennis hosting Bates on Thursday and Women’s Tennis entertaining Chapman on Friday. Men’s Tennis was scheduled to open on Feb. 8 at UC Santa Cruz, but the trip was canceled due to rain. Christopher Wiechert ’14 is expected to play No. 1 singles for the men’s team, while Jake Yasgoor ’17 and Graham Maassen ’17 will likely be in the singles lineup in their rookie seasons as well. Marie Fleming ’16 played No. 4 singles last year for the women’s team and should be in the top four again this spring.
