Claremont, Calif. (February 10, 2014) This week in Sagehens Athletics saw the Men's Basketball team win its big rivalry game with CMS in front of the usual capacity crowd at Voelkel Gymnasium, while Kyle Dalrymple '17 set a new program record for the Men's Swimming and Diving team.

Men's Basketball went 2-0 on the week at home, defeating Whittier 81-76 on Wednesday and then beating CMS 64-57 in a thriller on Saturday. The Sagehens got some huge contributions against Whittier from Adrian Brandon '15 and Nicholas Nordale '17, who each scored 14 points. Brandon, who studied abroad in the fall and only had four points all season, hit back-to-back three pointers in the second half after Whittier rallied from a nine-point deficit to tie the game.

Women's Basketball split the week, defeating Whittier 83-60 and falling to CMS 63-48. Basha Brulee-Wills '17 had a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds against Whittier and Amelia Hummel '16 had a solid effort against CMS with 11 points on 5-7 shooting from the floor.

The Men's and Women's Swimming and Diving teams fell to CMS on Saturday in a battle of SCIAC unbeatens, but had a strong individual effort from Kyle Dalrymple '17, who set a new school record in the 100-yard breaststroke, winning with a time of 58.73, breaking the old mark by .18. Dalrymple added a thrilling win in the 200-yard breaststroke, edging a CMS opponent by just three-tenths of a second.

Women's Lacrosse opened its season with a commanding 14-4 win over Whittier, jumping out to a 7-0 lead in the first 20 minutes. Jana London '14 had four goals and two assists and Sarah Markowitz '16 added three goals and an assist. Rachel Kessler '14 and Zoe Brown '15 helped key a defense that allowed only four goals on the day, all of which were on free position shots. Women's Lacrosse hosts CMS on Wednesday in the first of two big rivalry games after the teams had three thrillers last year, two of which resulted in Sagehen wins in overtime (including one in sudden death on a London goal in the SCIAC Tournament).

Baseball got its spring season underway and went 1-3 over the four games, taking one of three against Whitworth and falling to Emory in the weekend finale. Michael Caldwell '17 hit a grand slam to key a 6-5 win against Whitworth, while Jackson Badger '14 also had a big weekend at the plate, going 6-for-11 with six RBI, five of which came in one game (an 11-9 defeat to Whitworth). Baseball also hosts CMS this week on Saturday for a SCIAC doubleheader after crossing the street to face the Stags in a single game on Friday.

Softball had a tough week with narrow defeats to Lewis & Clark and Vanguard, but continued to get strong play out of Ashley Morello '15, who is now batting .500 on the young season. Morello started the week batting 3-for-3 with a walk against Lewis & Clark, and capped off the week with a 3-for-4 effort in a loss to Vanguard. The Sagehens open SCIAC play this weekend at Cal Lutheran.

Men's and Women's Track and Field start their seasons at home on Saturday for the annual Sagehens All Comers Meet, beginning at 10:30 a.m. Men's Tennis (at UC Santa Cruz) and Women's Golf (vs. CMS) had their season openers last week postponed due to weather. The Men's and Women's Golf teams both open this week, while Men's Tennis will open next Thursday at home against Bates.
