Claremont, Calif. (January 21, 2014) This week in Sagehens Athletics saw the Men’s and Women’s Swimming and Diving teams remain perfect in the SCIAC at 4-0, while the Men’s Basketball team stretched its winning streak to six games with wins over Occidental and UC Santa Cruz.

The Sagehens dominated Chapman in the swimming events, winning all by one of 28 races between the two genders, as Pitzer men’s swimmers won seven events between them. Andrew Wright ’16 captured the first individual event by winning the 1650-yard freestyle, while Timothy Hardman ’17 followed with a win in the 200-yard freestyle. Hardman also won the 100-yard freestyle.

Kyle Dalrymple ’17 took both breaststroke events, winning the 100 in 1:00.64 and adding a win in the 200 in 2:12.33. The 100-yard butterfly was won by William Thorson ’16, while Devon Kennedy ’16 won the 500-yard freestyle in 5:05.83.  On the women’s side, Cayla Nishizaki ’17, who usually competes in the freestyle, earned a win in the 100-yard backstroke.

Men’s Basketball stretched its winning streak to six games by winning a pair of close contests. The Sagehens pulled away midway through the second half for a 68-60 win over Occidental and fought off a late second half rally for an 89-83 win over UC Santa Cruz. Nicholas Nordale ’17 had a strong effort in the win over Occidental, finishing with 11 points and eight rebounds, including the basket that put the Sagehens ahead to stay midway through the second half (which was followed by a three-pointer from Joseph Eyen ’15 to stretch the lead to five).

The Women’s Basketball team fell at Occidental on Thursday 56-47 despite a strong defensive effort that saw the Sagehens hold the Tigers to only one field goal in the final 13 minutes of the game as they cut a 17-point deficit down to four. Basha Brulee-Wills ’17 had nine points and five rebounds in only 20 minutes of playing time, while Amelia Hummel ’16 pulled down seven rebounds and helped hold first-team All-SCIAC forward Elizabeth Messick of Occidental to only two points on 1-10 shooting.
