Sagehen Round Up for the Week of November 25, 2013

Women's Basketball

Basha Brulee-Wills ’17 led the Sagehens in both games of the David Wells Classic this weekend, including a win over Arizona Christian.

Claremont, Calif. (December 2, 2013) It was a bit of a quiet week for Sagehens Athletics over the Thanksgiving holiday, with the only action taking place on the hardwood at the David Wells Classic this weekend. There was plenty of excitement, though, as the Men’s Basketball team won the unofficial tournament championship as the only team with a 2-0 record, while the Women’s Basketball team picked up its first win of the year, with Pitzer athletes came up big for both teams.

Xavyr Moss ’14 had 17 points to lead the way for the Sagehens, including his team’s final three baskets of the game to provide the final margin of victory. His last basket came with 2:30 left to slow down a Johns Hopkins run and give the Sagehens a 57-52 lead, and the Blue Jays were only able to score a pair of two-point baskets, the last coming with 2.3 seconds left, as their comeback fell short. Nicholas Nordale ’17 added 12 big points off the bench, including a three-pointer at the halftime buzzer to give the Sagehens a 32-29 lead into the break.

Moss also added 13 points on Friday in the win over UC Santa Cruz, knocking down four three-pointers. The Sagehens are back in action this week as they open SCIAC play with a home game against Cal Lutheran on Wednesday before traveling to Caltech on Saturday.

Women’s Basketball, meanwhile, earned its first win on Saturday, 57-43 over Arizona Christian, by holding the Firestorm scoreless for a span of 10:35 over both halves, resulting in a 21-0 run that turned a 20-17 deficit into a commanding 38-20 lead. Basha Brulee-Wills ’17 had a team-high 17 points to lead the way, after also tallying 17 points and 13 rebounds against UC Santa Cruz on Friday and 13 points and 11 rebounds against Linfield on Tuesday.

Ruth Shapiro ’15 also had a major contribution to the win over Arizona Christian, after missing the first three games of the year with an injury, tallying a team-high 10 rebounds, to go along with five assists and four steals. Amelia Hummel ’16 added nine points, six rebounds and four steals, while shooting 4-7 from the floor.  The Sagehens host Cal Lutheran on Thursday and travel to Caltech on Saturday this week.

Swimming and Diving will also be back in action again this week, opening its SCIAC schedule with a home meet against Cal Lutheran on Saturday, beginning at 11 a.m. The Women’s Swimming and Diving team is currently ranked No. 14 nationally by CollegeSwimming.com.
