Jarrod Gaut ’14 had two goals to help the Men’s Water Polo team to a 10-5 win over No. 14 Santa Clara on his Senior Day.

Claremont, Calif. (October 28, 2013) This week in Sagehens Athletics saw the Volleyball team and Women’s Soccer team both end the regular season in second place in the SCIAC, and the Men’s Water Polo team pick up its biggest win of the season at home against No. 14 Santa Clara.

Men’s Water Polo won a pair of matches at Haldeman Pool on Saturday, defeating Caltech 16-9 and then knocking off Santa Clara 10-5 for its first win this fall over a nationally ranked team. The Sagehens were led against Santa Clara by Stephen Vint ’15 with three goals, and Jarrod Gaut ’14 who added two goals after his Senior Day ceremonies. Kyle Van der Linde ’15 led the team with three goals against Caltech, while goalie Austin Strong ’15 played offense and scored his first goal of the year.

Volleyball secured the No. 2 seed in the SCIAC Tournament with a 3-0 week, defeating Redlands and Chapman 3-1 and Caltech 3-0. The Chapman match was a head-to-head battle for second place, and the Sagehens put together a strong effort winning 25-18, 25-22, 23-25, 25-17. Ellen Yamasaki ’15 had 11 kills against Redlands and added seven kills in the key win over Chapman.  The Caltech win was the 20th of the season for the Sagehens, the first time since 2008 that they have reached the 20-win plateau.

Volleyball will next face No. 3 seed CMS at Cal Lutheran on Thursday in the SCIAC semifinals, with the championship played on Saturday at the site of the highest remaining seed. The Sagehens swept CMS during the regular season in two very tight matches, winning the first one 3-0 (27-25, 26-24, 25-23) and then taking the second one 3-1 with the fourth set going to 35-33.

The Women’s Soccer team also earned the No. 2 seed in the SCIAC Tournament and will also play CMS, although they will get to play their semifinal game at home on Thursday at 2:30 p.m. The Sagehens had a chance to win the regular season title after defeating Redlands 1-0 on Wednesday, but fell at Cal Lutheran on Saturday with the Regals earning the top seed instead. The Sagehens swept CMS during the regular season by identical 2-1 scores.

The Football team  had a hard-fought battle with Occidental in its annual rivalry game for The Drum, but the Tigers came away with a 13-7 win after stopping the Sagehens in the red zone with less than two minutes left in the game.  Colton Coss ’17 started at center for the second straight game, Sean Mulcahy ’16 had three catches for 24 yards at tight end, while Andrew Kurtz ’16 had two tackles defensively.
