Sagehen Round Up for the Week of October 21, 2013
Claremont, Calif. (October 28, 2013) This week in Sagehens Athletics saw plenty of excitement, including the second straight win for the Football team, a pair of leapfrogging wins from the Volleyball team, and a school record 12th win from the Women's Soccer team.
Women's Soccer set a new school record for wins in a season by moving to 12-2-1 on the year, including 10-2 in the SCIAC, tying it for first with Cal Lutheran. Alyssa Kim ’17 had the game-winning goal in the first half against Whittier, the first of her collegiate career, to help the Sagehens break the school record. Mary Stafford ’16 earned the start at center forward and added an assist in the second half, while Sara Ach ’14 was one of the four seniors honored before the game on their Senior Day. Women’s Soccer will host Redlands on Wednesday and then will be guaranteed to play for at least a share of the SCIAC title when it travels to Cal Lutheran on Saturday.
Volleyball also had a 2-0 week, winning 3-1 over both Occidental and CMS after dropping the first game each time. In doing so, the Sagehens leaped over Occidental in the SCIAC standings into fourth place on Friday, and then jumped over CMS into third place on Saturday. Ellen Yamasaki ’15 had several key contributions, contributing the winning block in a 26-24 in the second game and a pivotal late block in a 35-33 in the clinching fourth game. Volleyball ends the regular season this week, hosting Chapman on Friday with a potential chance to leapfrog again into second place.
Football won its second straight game by defeating La Verne 31-23 at Merritt Field. Colton Coss ’17 took over as the starting center after previously starting at left guard and keyed an offensive line that ran up 398 yards of total offense. Sean Mulcahy ’16 started at tight end and had four catches, including a crucial juggling catch on third down to set up the final Sagehen touchdown. Brandon Zemp ’17 added three kickoff returns for 57 yards, and Isaac Richard III ’16 had three tackles and a pass break-up. Football hosts its final home game of the season on Saturday at 1 p.m. against Occidental in the annual Battle for the Drum.
The winter season also got an early start as the Swimming and Diving teams competed at the Malibu Invitational. Several freshmen had strong debuts as Kyle Dalrymple '17 won the 50-yard breaststroke and Cayla Nishizaki '17 was second on the women's side in the 100-yard freestyle. Will Thorson ’16 added a second-place finish in the 50-yard butterfly, and Gabriel Leggott ’14 was fourth in the 50-yard backstroke. The Sagehens will compete this week at the Whittier Relays.
The first postseason event of the fall will also take place with Men’s and Women’s Cross Country competing at the SCIAC Championships. Paul Messana ’17 will help the Men’s Cross Country team in its bid for a SCIAC title, while Camille Matonis ’15 projects to be one of the top finishers for the Sagehens on the women’s side.
