Sagehen Round Up for the Week of April 8, 2013

Aubrey Douglass ’16 had the tying goal and assisted on the game-winner in a 9-8 road win over Occidental.

Claremont, CA (April 15, 2013) - This week in Sagehens Athletics saw a big wins for Women’s Lacrosse and Women’s Water Polo, while Men’s Tennis sent its senior class out in style in the final match of the season at Pauley Courts.

Women’s Lacrosse came away with a thrilling win on the road against Occidental, prevailing 9-8 to complete a season sweep of the Tigers. The Sagehens led 7-3 early in the second half, but Occidental scored five straight goals to pull ahead 8-7 with less than 10 minutes to play. However, Pitzer athletes then stepped up at both ends of the field to key the victory. Goalie Casey Leek ’13 saved a free position shot to keep the Occidental lead at one goal, and Aubrey Douglass ’16 tied the score with her third goal of the game moments later. Kaitlin Jones ’14 won the ensuing draw control, and Douglass then fed Jana London ’14 for the game-winner 36 seconds later. After Occidental got the ball back with a chance to tie, Zoe Brown ’15 came up with a key ground ball to stop one threat, and Leek came up with another in the closing moments to preserve the win.

Women’s Water Polo picked up a pair of SCIAC wins this week, knocking Whittier from the ranks of the unbeaten with a 10-7 win at Haldeman Pool on Wednesday and then cruising past Caltech 20-4. Katya (Katy) Schaefer ’16 had a combined 10 goals in the two games, including six against Caltech, the highest total for a Sagehens player this season, while Alyssa Woodward ’15 had five goals combined as she continues to lead the team in scoring, while Carter Grant ’15 added a goal against Caltech. The Sagehens host their final home match of the season on Saturday against CMS at 11 a.m., which will be a must-win heading into the tournament to keep its SCIAC title hopes alive.

Men’s Tennis hosted Chapman on Saturday in its final home match of the year and cruised to a 9-0 win, its third straight shutout of a SCIAC opponent. Max Sabel ’13 won 6-2, 7-5 at No. 1 singles, and teamed with Frankie Allinson PO ’13 for an 8-2 win in doubles in their final collegiate match at Pauley Courts. Christopher Wiechert ’14 also picked up a 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 2 singles, and earned a doubles win as well.

Women’s Tennis was also successful on the road against Chapman, coming away with an 8-1 win to improve to 11-5 on the season, including four straight wins. Jamie Solomon ’13 and Marie Fleming ’16 won their singles matches at No. 1 and No. 4, and then played their first match at No. 1 doubles together and earned an 8-5 win. The Sagehens, who are ranked No. 14 nationally, host No. 9 Redlands on Friday in their final home match of the year.  

Track and Field hosted the Pomona-Pitzer Invitational on Saturday, with competitors from all levels of collegiate athletics (and several post-graduate competitors) taking part. Joe Knight ’16 high-jumped 6-6.75, tying for the best in Division III and placing him third overall.  Alex Johnson ’13 (15:00.13) finished tenth in the 5,000 meters to give the Sagehens three of the top 10 runners. On the women’s side, Ellen Yamasaki ’15 broke 100 feet in the discus, while Alexandra Oxborough-Yankus ’14 broke 100 in the javelin (as well as throwing 131 feet in the hammer).

Baseball stepped out of the SCIAC for a tough challenge against top-ranked Linfield and dropped all three games. Erik Munzer ’13 swung a hot bat all weekend, batting 8-for-13 in the three-game series against arguably the top pitching staff in all of Division III, including a 4-for-5 effort in game two. Ryan Madden ’15 was also 3-for-9 in the Saturday doubleheader with a pair of RBI, while Mark Okuma ’15 threw two innings of hitless relief to key a strong bullpen effort. The Sagehens have a three-game series this weekend against Occidental, hosting the Tigers on Friday at 3 p.m.
