Claremont, Calif. (February 4, 2013)—Pitzer College student Jason Cox ’13 was named the Division III Men's Water Polo Player of the Year by the Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches (ACWPC).

Cox, who plays center, led the Sagehens to a 16-16 overall record and a 10-1 mark against Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) opponents this season, scoring a team-best 53 goals. It was the second straight year that he led the Sagehens in scoring; he tallied a team-leading 66 goals last season. He was also a first-team All-SCIAC selection and ACWPC first-team Division III All-American Selection.

Cox’s Sagehen teammate Jarrod Gaut ’14, who also plays center, was an honorable mention selection to the ACWPC Division III All-America team. Gaut bounced back from an injury that cost him most of the 2011 season to score 33 goals, ranking third on the team.

The Sagehens were the 2012 SCIAC Champions, going undefeated (8-0) against SCIAC opponents during the regular season, with Cox providing a key tiebreaking goal in the final minute against Chapman University to preserve the unblemished mark. The Sagehens capped off the year with an impressive fifth-place finish in the Western Water Polo Association Championships, knocking off No. 19 Santa Clara University in the finale. The ACWPC also crowned Sagehens Coach Alex Rodriguez Coach of the Year in 2012.

Cox majors in history at Pitzer College.
