Jana London '14 had nine goals in a big win over Occidental for Women's Lacrosse.

Claremont, Calif. (February 18, 2013)—This week was another big week in Sagehen Athletics: a great start for the Baseball team got even better, the Men's Basketball team earned its postseason ticket, Women’s Lacrosse picked up an upset win and five Women's Swimming program records fell.

Baseball got off to a hot start last weekend with four wins in four games, and began SCIAC play this week with a three-game series against cross-street rivals CMS. The Sagehens continued to roll, remarkably scoring at least one run in the first 13 innings of the weekend, capturing 11-1 and 13-3 wins in the first two games of the series. The final game was tighter, but the Sagehens bullpen closed the door in a 4-2 win.

Cameron Yen '16 improved to 2-0 in his young career by allowing one run over six innings in a 13-3 win in the second game of the series. E.J. Lopez ’15 batted .500 over the weekend, including a 3-for-3 performance in the opener, while Mark Okuma ’15 batted .364 with a home run.

Men's Basketball had a brief setback with a home loss to CMS after jumping out to a 16-1 lead, but regrouped for an emphatic 76-62 win at Occidental to clinch a bid to the SCIAC Tournament. James Xavyr Moss ’13 had 18 points, including 16 in the first half to stake the Sagehens to a 10-point lead at the break. The Sagehens end the regular season with a home game against Whittier on Tuesday. A win would set up another Sixth Street game on Friday at CMS in the SCIAC semifinals, while a loss would send them to top-seeded Redlands on Friday instead.

The postseason has already begun in the pool, and the Women's Swimming and Diving team saw five school records fall on the first day of the SCIAC Championships on Sunday. Margaret (Mari) Pettibone ’14 contributed to one of the records by swimming the breaststroke leg of the 400-yard medley relay, swimming her leg in 1:05.77. Pettibone will be in the breaststroke competition on Monday and Tuesday, while Dawn Barlow ’16 will be in the one-meter diving competition on Monday.

For the second straight year, the Women's Basketball team earned a Senior Day win by defeating CMS 69-65 in its final home game of the year. Ruth Shapiro ’15 had a strong all-around game with six points, 13 rebounds and seven assists to help the Sagehens to the victory.

Women's Lacrosse took a huge step forward this week by defeating Occidental, one of last year's SCIAC finalists. The Sagehens trailed 6-4 at the half, but dominated after intermission for a 15-12 win. Jana London '14 had a huge day with nine goals, seven in the second half, to tie a career high, while Aubrey Douglass ’16 chipped in with a goal and three assists. Casey Leek ’13 added 10 saves in goal, several of which came in the closing minutes with the Sagehens clinging to a narrow lead.

Women's Golf also began the spring season with a strong showing, coming in second out of three teams at Los Serranos. Lauren Dawson ’16 shot a 90 in her first collegiate competition, which was only seven shots behind the individual leaders on a day in which winds were blowing at 25 miles per hour.

The final spring sports get started this week, with Men's Tennis hosting Bates on Thursday and Women's Tennis traveling to La Verne on Friday. Men’s Tennis will be led by Chris Wiechert ’14 and Max Sabel ’13 in the top two spots, while Jamie Solomon ’13 played at No. 1 singles last year for the Sagehens and will be looking to return to form after an ACL injury in the NCAA Division III Nationals last May.
