Record Number of Students Awarded Teach For America Positions

Claremont, Calif. (May 17, 2013) — Pitzer College congratulates 13 students awarded Teach For America positions: Evelyn Cheung '13, Alison Espinosa-Setchko '13, Molly Hasegawa '13, Dusty Havens '13, Acacia Hori '13, Xochil Johansen '13, Danielle Johnson '13, Jessica Keener '13, Casey Leek '13, Benjamin Levine '14, Victoria Morales-O'Connor '13, Tara Rothe '13 and Danielle Ryu '13.

Cheung, a psychology major, declined the Teach For America offer to pursue opportunities in public relations, advertising and photography in New York, NY.

Espinosa-Setchko, a community healing and social engagement major, received a Fulbright to teach English in Spain and will defer Teach For America until next year.

Hasegawa, a double major in mathematics and psychology, will teach in Hawaii.

Havens, a psychology major, will teach in Miami, FL.

Hori, a neuroscience major, received a Fulbright Fellowship to teach English in Malaysia and will defer Teach For America for a year.

Johansen, a psychology and Chicano/a-Latino/a studies double major, will teach in Los Angeles, CA.

Johnson, a psychology and Africana studies double major, will teach in Detroit, MI.

Keener, a sociology major, will teach in Tulsa, OK.

Leek, a mathematical economics major, will teach in Tulsa, OK.

Levine, an economics major, will teach in Los Angeles, CA in fall of 2014.

Morales-O'Connor, a political studies and French double major, has been awarded a French Government English Teaching Assistantship through the Fulbright program and has deferred Teach For America for a year.

Rothe, a community-based agroecology and international and intercultural studies major, has deferred Teach For America and will teach in Chicago, IL next year.

Ryu, a psychology major, declined the Teach For America offer and will be working with Stanford University and the VA Palo Alto Health Care System on PTSD research.

Teach For America is a national teacher corps of outstanding recent college graduates, graduate students and professionals who commit to teach for two years in urban and rural public schools. This year, Pitzer received more Teach For America offers than it ever has in a single year—beating the record it set in 2012.
