Speechwriter, Comedian and TV Producer Jon Lovett to Keynote 2013 Pitzer College Commencement
Claremont, Calif. (April 17, 2013) —Pitzer College’s graduating class has selected Jon Lovett, former speechwriter for President Barack Obama and co-creator of the NBC show 1600 Penn, to be the 2013 Commencement keynote speaker. Pitzer College's forty-ninth Commencement Ceremony will be held on Saturday, May 18, 2013 at 10 a.m. at the Stephen L. Glass Commencement Plaza.
Lovett spent three years at the White House writing speeches on a wide array of public policy issues. He also crafted jokes for President Obama to use at events such as the annual White House Correspondents Dinner. Before joining the Obama administration, Lovett was the chief speechwriter to then-Senator Hillary Clinton, working both in her Senate office and on her presidential campaign. A 2004 graduate of Williams College, Lovett spent time doing standup comedy in New York before entering politics.
Sarah Maibach ’13 was chosen by a student selection committee to serve as the senior class speaker. A human biology major, Maibach is from Menlo Park, CA.
Following Pitzer tradition, the graduates also select a member of the staff or administration to be its honored guest and a member of the faculty to be its student marshal. This year, Dean of Students Moya Carter will serve as the honored guest and Assistant Professor of Environmental Analysis Brinda Sarathy as the student marshal. Professor of Psychology Mita Banerjee will serve as the faculty marshal.
President Laura Skandera Trombley will give the opening remarks. Evelyn Cheung '13 and Andres Pena '13 will present the senior gift and Alumni Board President Gilbert V. Gonzales ’03 will give the alumni greeting. Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean of Faculty Muriel E. Poston will present the graduating class. Trombley will join Robin M. Kramer ’75, chair of the Board of Trustees, and Registrar Eva Peters to present diplomas to the Class of 2013.
