Sagehen Round Up for the Week of November 24, 2012
Claremont, CA (December 3, 2012) This week in Sagehen Athletics saw the SCIAC season get underway for all four winter sports, with Men’s Basketball and both Swimming & Diving teams opening up their league slate with home wins over Chapman.
Men’s Basketball was the first to get the SCIAC season started on Wednesday and used a stifling first-half defense to hold Chapman to 13 points and held on for a 60-54 win at Voelkel Gymnasium. The Sagehens slipped to 1-1 with an 81-72 loss at Redlands on Saturday, rallying from a 22-point deficit to within three points midway through the second half, before coming up short. James Xavyr Moss ’13 averaged 10.0 points on the week, including 13 in the road loss to Redlands.
The Men’s Swimming & Diving team rolled to an easy 182-53 win over Chapman on Saturday, while the Women’s Swimming & Diving team also coasted to a 180-115 win. Combined, the Sagehens won 23 of 30 events and received contributions from their whole roster, as 19 different athletes earned first-place finishes in individual events (17 swimmers, two divers).
For the Men’s Swimming & Diving team, Andrew Wright ’16 won the 1000-yard freestyle, while William Thorson ’16 came in first in the 100-yard butterfly and contributed to two relay wins. On the women’s side, Margaret (Mari) Pettibone ’15 won an exciting race in the 200-yard breaststroke, defeating Samantha McLaughlin of Chapman by just 11-hundredths of a second. Dawn Barlow ’16 added a first place finish in the 1-meter diving competition, defeating five Chapman divers in the process.
The Women’s Basketball team started out the conference season 0-2 with losses to Chapman and Redlands (both of whom are undefeated so far this year). Ruth Shapiro ’15 led the Sagehens with 12 points in the loss to Chapman.
