Erin Edmonds ’14 scored a game-high 16 points in the Women’s Basketball team’s season opener against Dallas on Friday, Nov. 23.

Claremont, CA (November 26, 2012) - It was a bit of a quiet Thanksgiving week in Sagehen Athletics, with only the Men’s Basketball and Women’s Basketball teams in action at the David Wells Classic.

Men’s Basketball overcame its first loss of the season against The Master’s College on Friday, by putting together a dominant 77-45 win over regional rival UC Santa Cruz on Saturday. Joseph Eyen ’15 showed off his shooting touch with three straight three-pointers in the second half to finish with nine points, tying James Xavyr Moss ’13 for high total among the Pitzer contingent.

Women’s Basketball finally got its season underway after its first two games were called off, the first at Hope International due to mechanical problems in HIU’s gym, the second against Linfield when Linfield came down with food poisoning. The third try at a season opener took place against Dallas on Friday, and the Sagehens came up on the short end of a close 67-62 contest, in which it had an attempt at a go-ahead three-pointer in the final 20 seconds hit off the rim.

Erin Edmonds ’14 led the way with 16 points on 5-5 shooting from the floor and 6-7 shooting from the line, while Ruth Shapiro ’15 chipped in with 13 points and eight rebounds. Amelia Hummel ’16 got her collegiate career off to a strong start by pulling in a game-high 13 rebounds and adding three steals, while Dana Brozost-Kelleher ’16 hit a clutch three-pointer late in the game to tie the score, before Dallas was able to hold off the Sagehens. The Sagehens also fell to UC Santa Cruz on Saturday on the second day of the David Wells Classic to drop to 0-2 on the young season.

All four winter sports begin SCIAC play already this week, with everyone facing Chapman in their conference openers, beginning with Men’s Basketball at home on Wednesday, followed by Women’s Basketball at home on Thursday. The Men’s and Women’s Swimming and Diving teams also open SCIAC competition at home on Saturday against Chapman as well.
