Men's Soccer Earns NSCAA National Ranking

Claremont, Calif. (October 30, 2012) — The Sagehens Men's Soccer team, riding an 11-game win streak, entered the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Division III national rankings at No. 24 this week.

The Sagehens Men’s Soccer Team—2012 SCIAC Champions

The Sagehens are 14-4-1 on the year and earned the 2012 SCIAC championship with a 13-2-1 conference record. The team is also now ranked third in the NSCAA West Region, a big jump from last week when they were in the seventh spot.

The Sagehens move into SCIAC Tournament play this week, hosting the semifinals on Thursday at 2:30 p.m. against Whittier, which was the last team to defeat them back on September 22. The rematch took place in Claremont on October 17 and the Sagehens earned a 2-1 win on a diving header with 2:19 left in double overtime from junior Ryan Miller (PO '14).

If the Sagehens defeat Whittier in the semifinals on Thursday, they will host the championship game on Saturday at noon against the winner of the other semifinals between Redlands and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps. The SCIAC tournament winner receives an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament, while the runner-up will be in contention for an at-large bid.

The Sagehens secured the SCIAC title with a 3-0 week last week, defeating Redlands 1-0 on Monday on the road in a battle between the top two teams in the SCIAC standings on another goal from Miller, this time in the 71st minute. The Sagehens then used an early goal from midfielder Arash Mahboubi (PO '14) to defeat Caltech 1-0 on Wednesday and clinch the title and the top seed in the conference tournament.
