Pitzer College Students Awarded Teach For America Fellowships
Claremont, Calif. (May 3, 2012) — Pitzer College congratulates students awarded Teach For America fellowships for fall 2012: Betsy Diaz '12, Brooke Marcy '12, Stephanie Migdail '12, Christopher Peck '12, Alyshia Silva '12, Laura Silverberg '12, Sarah Surrey '12, Amelia Troutman '12 and Elisha Whitman '12.
Diaz is a double major in neuroscience and psychology and will teach in Baltimore, MD.
Marcy, a peace and conflict studies major, has been awarded a fellowship to teach in Hawaii. She also received a Fulbright Fellowship to Indonesia and will defer her Teach For America award until 2013.
Migdail, an English & world literature major and economics minor, will teach in Las Vegas, NV.
Peck is a psychology major and will teach in Hawaii.
Silva is an environmental analysis major and will teach in Memphis, TN. She was also selected as an Amgen Fellow—a fellowship given each year to a small number of math and science majors from across the country—and will receive additional funding, technology and resources for her classroom.
Silverberg, a double major in environmental studies and anthropology, will teach in Chicago, IL. She was the second Pitzer student to be selected as an Amgen Fellow this year.
Surrey, a double major in Spanish and English & world literature, will teach in Newark, NJ.
Troutman is a psychology major and will teach in Chicago, IL.
Whitman, a double major in Africana studies & international/intercultural studies, will teach in Los Angeles, CA.
Since Teach For America began in 1990, twenty Pitzer students have participated in the program, not including these nine fellows. This year, Pitzer received more Teach For America Fellowships than it ever has in a single year.
Teach For America is a national teacher corps of outstanding recent college graduates, graduate students and professionals who commit two years to teaching in underprivileged rural and urban schools. This year more Pitzer students were awarded Teach For America fellowships than ever before.
