Pitzer College Alumna Wins Travel Blog Contest

Claremont, Calif. (April 20, 2012) — Pitzer College alumna Kathleen Kile '97 won the Women on Their Way travel blog contest and will serve as a contributing writer for the blog's "Local Nation" section. "Local Nation" is a new initiative for Women on Their Way, an online resource for female travelers run by Wyndham Worldwide. Kile's entries will appear under the title "Traveling Large."

Kile is an avid traveler. She has studied silk in China and swum with sharks in Oahu. She knows the challenges a full-figured person faces when traveling and hopes that by sharing her experiences she will encourage others "to put the power back into their lives."

"I want to be that person who can inspire at least one person not to sit on that couch, watch TV and think, 'Gee I'd like to do that,'" Kile said. "I want them to know they don't have to sit on the sidelines."

The mailroom supervisor at Pitzer, Kile is also an accomplished seamstress who created Pitzer President Laura Skandera Trombley's presidential regalia and recently made a dress out of a magazine for RE:BOOK, a repurposed paper art contest sponsored by the Claremont Colleges Library. Kile funds many of her travels through her work as a seamstress.

Kile majored in English and world literature and sociology at Pitzer.
