Sagehen Round Up for the Week for February 27
Claremont, Calif. ( March 05, 2012) -- The Sagehen Men’s Basketball team came up just short in the SCIAC championship game to neighboring rival Claremont-M-S on Saturday 60-54, but not without a huge contribution from Po Grant ’13. With the Sagehens on the ropes and trailing 43-27 with less than 10 minutes to play, Grant made three three-pointers in a span of four minutes (and had a fourth go halfway down and rattle out in that stretch) to get Pitzer-Pomona back within 45-41. The Sagehens got as close as two points in the final minute, but ended up just short in its comeback efforts.
Travis Rooke-Ley ’12 continued his spectacular performance on the mound for the Pitzer-Pomona Baseball team this spring, tossing a five-hit shutout in a 3-0 win over Cal Lutheran. Rooke-Ley is now 4-0 on the year with a 1.10 ERA, and has given up only one earned run in those four wins (a harmless run in a 17-1 win over Caltech). Erik Munzer ’13 added a two-run homer in the third inning to give Rooke-Ley all the offense he would need. Sam Fox ’15 was a bright spot as the Sagehens closed out the three-game series with a loss to Cal Lutheran, batting 3-for-4 in a 3-2 loss, including a ninth-inning single to try to key a comeback that fell short. The Sagehens will be at Alumni Field this Saturday at 11 a.m. for a doubleheader with Occidental.
Ashley Morello ’15 helped the Softball team complete a doubleheader sweep of Occidental with a 3-for-4 performance in the nightcap of a doubleheader. Ari Roach ’12 was 2-for-3 with two RBI in the opening game and Emily Buika ’12 was 2-for-3 with an RBI in the nightcap for the Sagehens, who are back in action this weekend with a home doubleheader against La Verne.
Jason Cox ’13 earned a prestigious honor from the fall season, as he was named a first-team All-American for the Pitzer-Pomona Men’s Water Polo team by the ACWPC (Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches). Cox had a team-high 65 goals on the year, helping the Sagehens to a SCIAC championship. Coach Alex Rodriguez was also named the ACWPC Division III Coach of the Year.
Avery Barron ’15 finished eighth in the three-meter diving event at the SCIAC Women’s Swimming and Diving championships, advancing through to the final round. On the men’s side, Andrew Savage ’15 swam the first leg of the Sagehen 200-yard freestyle relay team, which came in second, the 800 yard freestyle relay team, which came in third, and the 400-yard freestyle team, which also came in third. Individually, Savage was also fourth in the 200-yard freestyle, and fifth in the 100-yard
Chris Wiechert ’14 and Max Sabel ’13 were in action with the Pitzer-Pomona Men’s Tennis team at the ITA Indoor Nationals in St. Peter, Minnesota, and helped the Sagehens battle some of the top teams in the nation. Wiechert was 2-1 in his three singles matches at No. 2, picking up wins against host Gustavus Adolphus and eighth-ranked Trinity (Texas). Sabel picked up a key singles win in three sets in a 6-3 win over Gustavus Adolphus and was a perfect 3-0 in doubles on the weekend (with partner Frankie Allinson).
After a long lay-off, Women’s Water Polo team, led by Pitzer captains Annie Oxborough-Yankus ’12 and Perri Hopkins ’12, and leading scorer Alyssa Woodward ’15, will be back in action this weekend at the Cal Lutheran Invitational. The Sagehens were last in action on February 11 when they defeated Redlands and CMS at La Verne’s tournament.
