Sagehen Round Up for the Week for January 30
Claremont, Calif. (February 6, 2012) The Sagehen Women's Swimming and Diving team continuing an impressive streak going against Occidental, defeating the Tigers for the 30th year in a row. Avery Barron '15 came in second in the diving competition, while Mari Pettibone '15 contributed points in the 200-yard breaststroke and the 1000-yard freestyle. The Men's Swimming and Diving team made it a clean sweep of Occidental with a 130-83 win. Andrew Savage '15 contributed to a medley relay win, and came in second in the 100-yard freestyle, while Vincent Giannotti '12 was second in the 500-yard freestyle.
The Men's Baseball team got its bats going in a big way with a 19-2 win over Whitworth on Thursday. The Sagehens used an 11-run fifth inning to pull away and support a strong pitching performance from Travis Rooke-Ley '12, who allowed just one hit in five innings while striking out seven to get the win. E.J. Lopez '15 and Erik Munzer '13 had two RBI apiece, while Sam Fox '15 had two runs scored and an RBI. The Sagehens start SCIAC play this weekend with a three-game series against Whittier on Friday and Saturday, with Friday's game on the road and Saturday's doubleheader at home.
The spring season got even busier as well this weekend, as Men's Tennis, which was ranked No. 8 in the nation in the preseason NCAA Division III poll, opened its spring with a 6-3 defeat against Azusa-Pacific, the No. 4 ranked team in NAIA. Chris Wiechert '14 and Max Sabel '13 competed at No. 2 and No. 3 singles for the Sagehens, respectively.
Women's Water Polo picked up its first win on Saturday (12-6 over Cal State San Bernardino) behind three goals from Alyssa Woodward '15.
Sagehen Women's Softball dropped two games to undefeated Vanguard, as Bri Marcantoni '12 had an RBI double in the first game to stake the Sagehens to a 1-0 lead, but the Lions were able to come back for a 3-1 win.
Men's Basketball and Po Grant '13 won a close 74-68 game against Redlands on Saturday to take over sole possession of second place in the SCIAC at 7-2 and hosts Cal Lutheran in a key home game on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. as it tries to keep pace with first-place Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.
Three more spring sports open their seasons this week, as Men's Golf is at the Laminate Grip Tournament on Thursday, Women's Golf is at the first SCIAC Tournament at Empire Lakes on Friday, and Women's Lacrosse opens up against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Saturday.
