Sagehen Round Up for the Week for February 6
Claremont, Calif. (February 13, 2012) - Several Pitzer athletes continued to make their mark this week with strong performances in big wins for the Sagehens.
Travis Rooke-Ley ’12 had his second straight impressive pitching performance for the Baseball team as the squad’s No. 1 pitcher, allowing no earned runs over seven innings of work in a 10-5 win in its SCIAC opener against Whittier (Rooke-Ley left the game after seven innings with the Sagehens ahead 10-1). E.J. Lopez ’15 was 2-for-3 with three RBI at the plate in that game as well. In the second game of the series, an 11-6 Sagehen win, Erik Munzer ’13 was 2-for-3 with three runs scored, Ben Cohen ’12 was 2-for-4 with an RBI and Isaac Richard ’15 had a pair of RBI. Lopez (second base) and Sam Fox ’15 (shortstop) have also developed into a strong double-play combination for the Sagehens, who host Caltech on Friday in the first game of a three-game series.
Women’s Water Polo won both of its matches this weekend, as it defeated Redlands 13-7 and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 15-13 at the La Verne Mini-Tournament. Annie Oxborough-Yankus PI ’12 had four goals in the CMS win, including one which broke a 13-13 tie with three minutes to play, while Perri Hopkins ’12 added three, as the two Pitzer captains led the way in a dramatic win.
Alyssa Woodward ’15 also had a combined four goals in the two matches to continue her strong first-year season, as she leads the Sagehens with 17 goals. Carter Grant ’15 contributed the tying goal in the win over CMS, while Rachel Noll ’15 had 12 saves in the win over Redlands, nine of which came in the second half.
Softball split its two games at home this week, as rain and darkness affected their schedule. Shortstop Ari Roach ’12 keyed a 10-7 win over Chapman by starting the game with her offense and ending it with her defense. Roach hit a two-run homer in the first inning to start the scoring for the Sagehens, and then ended the game when she fielded a grounder up the middle, stepped on second and turned the double-play. Ashley Morello ’15 also had a two-run double in the fifth inning to put Pitzer-Pomona ahead 9-6 and provide what proved to be the winning runs. The Sagehens open SCIAC play on Saturday with a home doubleheader against Redlands.
Ruthie Shapiro ’15 had eight points and seven rebounds to help the Women’s Basketball team to a 68-42 win over Caltech on Thursday. The Women’s Lacrosse team also opened its season at CMS and has its home opener this coming Saturday against Whittier. Several Pitzer athletes will have important roles on the team this year, including goal-scorer Jana London ’14 and goalies Casey Leek ’14 and Dana Christensen ’15. Leek was a first-team All-SCIAC selection last year, while London was on the second team.
