Pitzer College #1 in Nation for Most Fulbright Scholarship Awardees

Claremont, Calif. (October 24, 2011) — For the second consecutive year, The Chronicle of Higher Education ranked Pitzer College as the top producer of Fulbright students among all US liberal arts colleges in the "bachelor's institution" category. This is the eighth year Pitzer College has been the national leader in Fulbright Fellowships per thousand students. In the 2010-11 academic year, 20 Pitzer students and an alumna were awarded Fulbright Fellowships.

Pitzer is first among all US liberal arts college and is tied with Harvard University to rank eighth overall after University of Michigan at Ann Arbor, Northwestern University, Yale University, Stanford University, University of Chicago (tied), Columbia University and Boston College. The Chronicle of Higher Education's "Top Producers of US Fulbright Students" list is dated as of October 7, since then the Institute of International Education has confirmed 20 Fulbright Fellowships awarded to Pitzer College.

"To annually produce the largest number of Fulbright Fellowship awardees in the nation is a testament to our talented students, excellent faculty and dedicated staff. We are a strong community and one that is committed to creating extraordinary opportunities for all of our students," said President Laura Skandera Trombley.

This year's awardees included: Serena Acker '11, Leora Auino '11, Allison Backman '11, Sam Brown '11, Hannah Carr '11, Janice Cho '11, Liana Engie '11, Romy Feder '11, Emma Fisher '11, Rachel Haney '11, Anja Hughes-Stinson '11, Paul Kim '11, Katherine Kirby '03, Sarah Lee '11, Colin Mickle '11, Terra Michalowski '11, Lily Wiggins '11, Ted Winslow '11, Eliot Yasumura '11 and Christopher Young '11.

"We continue to draw strong applications from the student body, including student populations underrepresented in the Fulbright pool including students of color, science majors and non-traditional age students," said Nigel Boyle, Pitzer's Fulbright Program advisor, " Among our winners this year, three are non-traditional age 'New Resources Students' and two are military veterans." In the last decade, 42% of Pitzer's 130 Fulbright winners have been students of color and also include veterans from all branches of US military services.

Pitzer student and alumni accomplishments are enhanced by the College's extensive study abroad opportunities and community engagement programs, internships and volunteer opportunities. Pitzer students earned over 100,000 hours of community engagement last year and 77% of students studied abroad.
