Sagehen Round Up for the Week of October 3
Jason Cox '13 and Stephen Vint '15 had key roles in helping the Pitzer-Pomona Men's Water Polo team to a 3-1 weekend at the Claremont Convergence. Cox and Vint each had four goals to tie for the team lead in a 17-14 overtime win over Chapman on Friday. Goalie Austin Strong '15 also had some late heroics in an 8-7 win over Vanguard on Saturday, as he tipped the potential tying shot wide for a save in the final moments of regulation to preserve the one-goal win. Cox leads the Sagehens with 31 goals this season.
Traci Lopez '12 continued to lead the Pitzer-Pomona Women's Soccer team in scoring by tallying her team-high seventh goal of the season in a 2-1 road loss at Redlands on Saturday. Lopez has helped the Sagehens to a 6-4 overall record and a 3-3 mark in the SCIAC, putting it in strong position to qualify for the SCIAC Tournament. Rachel Eckerlin '12 also serves as a team captain for the Sagehens as a central midfielder, while Erin Edmonds '14 has produced three goals on the season, two of which have been game-winners.
Lawrence McDonald '15 has been a key part of the Men's Soccer team's strong start to conference play (5-2 SCIAC), as he has been one of six freshmen in the Pitzer-Pomona starting line-up. He has scored two goals on the year, including a big one in a 2-0 road win over neighboring rival Claremont-Mudd-Scripps. Erik Munzer '13 has served as a team captain during his junior season and has been one of the team's standout players in the central defense.
Ellen Yamasaki '15 continued her strong season for the Pitzer-Pomona Volleyball team, as she leads the Sagehens in kills with 191 (second place on the team is 129 kills). She is also second on the team in digs with 177.
Tim Stapenhorst '12 has been part of an offensive line that has paved the way for running back Luke Sweeney (Pomona '13) to lead the nation in rushing at 182.7 yards per game. Stapenhorst, who plays left tackle, and the Pitzer-Pomona offensive line have also allowed only six sacks in 150 passing plays this season, including none in 38 plays in their last home game against Chapman.
