2011 Sagehen Softball Preview and 2010 Recap
Claremont, Calif. (March 7, 2011) – The 2010 Sagehen women's softball team was the first in Sagehen history to beat powerhouse Chapman University in 10-2 and 2-1 games. Alexis Garcia '11 led the Southern California intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) in batting average of .500 and was named to the ALL SCIAC First Team and All-West Region Team—the first Sagehen in over 10 years. Brianna Marcantoni '12, the 2010 Sagehen MVP, will return this season to first base and the plate. She posted a .350 batting average last year with 13 RBIs and three homeruns to earn a spot on the All-SCIAC Second Team.
Centerfielder Emily Buika '12 was named one of the captains for the 2011 season, succeeding pitcher and a 2010 captain Melanie Gularte '10, who graduated. Returning players will help anchor the lineup, Christina Scheckler '13 will also return to the outfield following the completion of her P-P basketball season. Shortstop Arianna Roach '12 posted a .290 batting average and two homeruns while providing solid defensive plays.
The Sagehen welcomes nine first years to the roster this season including Shannon Julius '14.
The 2011 team, with its solid returning core and talented new faces, should make an exciting run for the SCIAC playoffs this season.
