Pitzer College Alumna Creates Yearlong Art Installation for Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions

Claremont, Calif. (February 28, 2011) – Pitzer College alumna Kim Schoenstadt '95 developed a yearlong site specific installation for the Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions, entitled Panted Over/Under Parts 1-4. The project, currently in Part 3 until March, began in June 2010. The final installment runs from March 24 to April 17, 2011.

Schoenstadt's exhibition is project based on the mismatched color patterning created by the "graffiti maintenance" on freeway retaining walls and other open walls in the city. Works are written and/or drawn onto the walls during each part, then painted over with Schoenstadt's color palette to create a layered, abstracted painting defined by the shapes of past projects. Schoenstadt applies portions of a large wall drawing with tape prior to each "painting out" preserving the work below. Part 4 will reveal the complete drawing constructed out of fragments from the history of the project.

Kim Schoenstadt majored in art while at Pitzer College.
