Pitzer College Student to Publish Paper in European Union Center of California Publication
Claremont Calif. (May 4, 2011) — Pitzer College student Chris Young '11 will publish a paper entitled "Does Influence Trump Evidence? The Politics Behind the EU's Water Framework Directive" in the European Union Center of California's 2011 volume of the Claremont-UC Research Conference on the European Union.
The paper will attempt to understand how political actors and organizations have impacted the effectiveness of the European Union Water Framework Directive (WDF) and explore the influence of public and private institutions during each of the four main stages of the policy process: conception, drafting, adoption and implementation. It will show that even with outside technical expertise and strong environmental lobbies, the political influences which shaped the adoption of the final WFD reduced it to a weak piece of legislation with little community oversight or enforcement mechanisms.
Young is a self-designed international environmental policy major. "Does Influence Trump Evidence? The Politics Behind the EU's Water Framework Directive" is expected to be published in the summer 2011 issue.
