Pitzer College Student the Conference 800 Meters Champion

Claremont, Calif. (May 7, 2010) — Pitzer College congratulates Wynton Marsalis '10, the 2010 Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference 800 meter champion. He also received the 2010 Sagehen Coach's Award.

Marsalis, a sociology major and Africana studies minor, ended his remarkable season by leading the entire distance during the 800 meter individual race and shattering the previous 1985 Sagehen four-man 800 meter relay record with his team.

Marsalis received the 2010 Coach's Award for his consistent focus and determination during practice and competitions.

"It has been my distinct pleasure as an advisor to have the opportunity to see Wynton excel not only in his academics but also as a student-athlete. Moreover, student-athletes of Pitzer College, like Wynton, deserve commendation for their discipline to their collegiate endeavors whether they are academic or involve athletic competition," said Assistant Professor Alicia Bonaparte.

About the Sagehens

Pitzer College joins with Pomona College in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. Sagehen teams include soccer, basketball, football, baseball, track & field, golf, tennis, water polo, swimming and diving. Pitzer students also participate in the Claremont Colleges club sports programs that compete nationally.
