Pitzer Student Justin Weitzel ’09 Wins HBO’s Flight of the Conchords Fan Video Contest

Claremont, CA (March 26, 2009) — Pitzer College student Justin Weitzel ’09 won the grand prize in HBO’s Flight of the Conchords Lip Dub Fansterpiece contest.

Weitzel submitted a stop-motion animation video comprised of 1,496 individual still-fames to make up the 2:29:06 second final product, a technique he learned at Pitzer College. The video was shot with a Web-cam on his laptop on the streets of San Francisco and edited entirely by Weitzel.

“The video is an earnest and light-hearted documentation of a fan who has done an excellent job translating the energy he enjoys from the HBO hit series into a sort of homage. It's fun to watch!” said Stephanie Hutin, director of production for the intercollegiate media studies program.

Wietzel is one of ten grand prize winners. Their videos were edited to create a single “fansterpiece” to promote Flight of the Conchords.

Justin Weitzel, a Núñez scholar and media studies major, hopes to work as a documentarian. He said, “My Pitzer professors not only encourage and nurture my skills, but their compassion and humanitarianism also demonstrated that film can be a powerful tool for social change.”
