Pitzer President Laura Skandera Trombley Receives CASE CEO Leadership Award

Award Honors Campus Leaders for Outstanding Efforts to Promote Understanding and Support of Education

Claremont, Calif. (October 31, 2008) – Pitzer College President Laura Skandera Trombley received the 2008 Chief Executive Officer Leadership Award, given by District VII of the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE).

The award recognizes institutional leaders for outstanding contributions to their campus communities, for efforts to promote public understanding of education and for support of advancement at their campuses. President Trombley will receive her award, and provide remarks, at the CASE District Conference in December 2008. She will also be honored at the CASE International Conference.

President Trombley became president of Pitzer College in 2002, and quickly became known for her high level of energy and devotion to the College. Under her leadership, the academic and co-curricular programs were enhanced with an infusion of research and awards funding and the establishment of several new academic centers and majors. The residential life program was radically transformed with the construction of three new residence halls and revitalization of grounds and existing buildings. With the faculty, she implemented an SAT-optional admission policy, which established Pitzer as a West Coast leader in this practice. In her second year, President Trombley secured the largest single-donor gift since the institution's founding and as a result the College was able to complete its first comprehensive capital campaign over its goal and ahead of schedule.

Before joining Pitzer, President Trombley was vice president for academic affairs and dean of faculty at Coe College. Prior to that she was at the State University of New York in Potsdam where she was awarded early tenure as associate professor of English and held several administrative posts, including director of the Teaching, Tenure and Promotion Assistance Program and assistant provost. President Trombley is a highly regarded Mark Twain scholar.
