Newsweek Film Critic David Ansen to Speak at Pitzer College

Award-winning writer to discuss movies and the art of criticism

CLAREMONT, Calif. (Nov. 6, 2003) — David Ansen, film critic and senior editor for Newsweek magazine, will speak at Pitzer College from 4:15 to 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 11, in the Broad Performance Space of the Edythe and Eli Broad Center.

Ansen received his B.A. in English from Harvard in 1967, earning magna cum laude honors and election to Phi Beta Kappa. He began his career as a critic with the Real Paper in Cambridge, Mass. He joined Newsweek as an associate editor in 1977, was promoted to general editor in 1979, senior writer in 1983 and senior editor in 1998.

Ansen's other writing credits include Film Comment, Cineaste, Cosmopolitan, The Los Angeles Times Book Review, Elle, and Men's Journal, among others. He also has been a guest on "Nightline," "Entertainment Tonight," CNN, "Access Hollywood," MacNeil-Lehrer, the BBC and MSNBC.

The Newspaper Guild of New York honored him in 1989, 1987 and 1983 with the Page One Award for feature writing and magazine reviews. He received a National Headliner Award in 1984 for "consistently outstanding magazine columns."

Ansen has written several documentaries, including profiles of screen legends Bette Davis (1994/TNT), Groucho Marx (1991/HBO), Greta Garbo (1990/TNT) and Elizabeth Taylor (1996/PBS).

Ansen served from 1990 to 1998 on the selection committee of the New York Film Festival. He twice served on film festival juries at the Sundance Film Festival and the Hawaiian International Film Festival. He also has served on juries at film festivals in Istanbul, Bermuda and Connecticut.

This is a remarkable opportunity to hear Ansen talk about movies, movie criticism and the state of the art. A question-and-answer session will follow his talk. The event is free and open to the public.
