Camp Afflerbaugh-Paige

Borrowed Voices:  A spoken word, poetry and hip-hop program that focuses on conducting writing and self-expression workshops. The goal of the program is to help improve reading and writing skills of the wards at Camp Afflerbaugh-Paige. The program identifies existing abilities, while incorporating literacy into their daily lives. Volunteers help design a publication based on the semester's word, which is presented at the bi-annual Borrowed Voices, held at Pitzer.

Theatre Programs:  Wards have a chance to participate in writing excercises and theatre games revolving around making change within their communities. Through these various activities the wards create short skits with the goal of performing them at the end of the Pitzer semester.

Art Program:  Utilizing the power of imagination this program seeks to explore through art the varied stories of the student's lives. Each class will afford the wards the option to utilize different mediums, which include charcoal, acrylic, colored pencil, collage, pastels, markers, ink and many others. The purpose of every assignment will be to tell a story based on their personal experience. All of the assignments will be compiled to form a book that will serve as a powerful representation of the ward's creative abilities.

Tutoring and Mentoring:  Wards receive personal tutoring and mentoring in sujects ranging from Math, Science and Economics to English, History and Government.

HERO Program (Homework Enrichment & Reading Outreach)

Tutoring:  College students help mentor and tutor children in a variety of different topics and areas.

Gardening:  Work with the women and kids to maintain the bucolic garden that is an integral part of HERO.

Mural Program:  HERO children along with Pitzer students completed a mural on a HERO wall depicting the world that incorporated aspects of different cultures. There are ongoing opportunities for Pitzer students to participate in future mural projects.

Prototypes

Reflective Writing:  Students work with women of Prototypes to help them go over their journals, that are focused on the women's life experiences.

Tutoring:  Women and children in the transitional housing program receive tutoring in a variety of subjects in order ot help them with their GED or other studies.

Gardening:  An ongoing community project involving the families and students to maintain and build upon the existing garden.

Mural Program:  Students, women and children collaborate on new and future mural projects.

Pomona Economic Opportunity Center (PEOC, aka Day Labor Center)

ESL:  Group teaching and one-on-one tutoring of day laborers to help them learn English and improve their English language skills.

Computer Education:  Day laborers have access to computers and receive information about the basics of email, the Internet and word processing.

Health Education:  General information about safety in the workplace, sexually transmitted diseases and other health related issues.

Reach LA

Art Program:  Kids use various mediums to express themselves through art with the assistance of students.

Computer Education:  Students can work with kids ro teach them the basics of word processing, the Internet and email.

Health Education Outreach:  Work with kids in the Reach LA program and reach out to kids in the surrounding community about health issues related to their every day lives.

Radio Station Program:  Youth run Reach LA radio station. Students can work with the kids to produce radio programs.

Youth Festivals:  Organize and participate in youth festivals to disseminate information about Reach LA to local kids from the community.

Queer Resources:  Be a part of fostering a positive atmosphere and building a place for gay and lesbian kids to be themselves and to seek information.
