Paid short-term and long-term training positions with private industry and technical universities in chemistry, computer science, forestry, horticulture, engineering are available throughout Norden (Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden) lasting from 8 to 12 weeks from May to October are available.

  • Bunac: Work in Britain - The British Universities of North America Club (BUNAC) allows participants to experience short-term work in Britain ( England, Scotland, or Wales ) for up to six months any time of the year. Participants find their won jobs and may work in any field, although most find work in the service industry (retail, restaurants, pubs, etc). The program is open to U.S. citizens who are full-time students or graduating seniors, provided they begin the program within 6 months after graduation. BUNAC also sponsors work programs in Australia for up to four months and New Zealand up to one year. These programs are open to U.S.citizens aged 18-30, currently residing in the US.
  • Careers Abroad with Global Volunteers International (GVI) - Jobs in the field and field work placements ideal for graduates, students and professionals looking for practical fieldwork experience to enhance their career while at the same time benefiting local non-governmental or aid reliant organizations. Features a wide range of jobs in the fields of education, research, environmental management and wildlife research.
  • CDS International - CDS offers training opportunities in Germany, Singapore, Switzerland, Argentina and Turkey ranging from 3-24 months in business/finance, marketing/PR, information technology, engineering, and other related fields. Every program consists of an internship component; some have academic or language training elements as well. CDS arranges placements and acquires appropriate work permits in addition to other logistical support. Depending upon program, knowledge of foreign language required and financial aid is available.

  • French Ministry of Education - The French Ministry of Education offers paid teaching assistantship positions to teach English in primary and secondary schools in France. Applicants must be American citizens, 20-30 years of age, graduates or undergraduates, majoring or minoring in French, or having a good working knowledge of French. Teaching appointments begin n October and last 6-7 months. Applications are available online in September and the priority deadline is mid-December (for the following October).

  • Appalachians Abroad Teach in China - If you have a bachelor's degree and would like to participate in the adventure of a lifetime, you man want to consider applying for a teaching position in China through the Marshall University 's Appalachians Abroad Program. Universities from all over the People's Republic of China regularly agree to invite Appalachians Abroad participants to come to China and teach English as a foreign language. These one and two-year teaching positions usually begin from August or March.
  • Association of American Schools in South America (AASA) - Positions for credentialed K-12 teachers in South America. The Association sponsors an annual recruiting fair in the States.
  • Central European Teaching Program - CETP offers placement for the school year in elementary and high schools throughout Hungary, Poland, Romania, and Latvia.
  • China Teaching Program - CTP is based at Western Washington University and offers placements in the People's Republic of China. Experts in business and law are also placed.
  • Civic Education Project - CEP is a private voluntary organization dedicated to supporting higher education reform and democratic education in the states of Central/Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union. Their Visiting Lecturer Program places Western-trained scholars in teaching and development positions across the region. In addition to their classroom teaching CEP lecturers are also agents of change. Visiting lecturers engage in a wide variety of outreach activities, including curriculum revision and library development projects, the organization of faculty retraining seminars, and the sponsoring of academic conferences for students and faculty colleagues.

  • International Volunteer Programs Association - (IVPA) is an alliance of nonprofit, non-governmental organizations based in North America, that are involved in international volunteer and internship exchanges.
  • JET: Japan Exchange and Teaching Program - JET is a program sponsored by the Japanese government. Positions are available as an Assistant Language Teacher (ALT), Coordinator for International Relations (CIR), or – for non-U.S. citizens only – Sports Exchange Teacher (SEA). The salary is sufficient to cover personal expenses for living in Japan, and round-trip air transportation is provided. Japanese language not required. Contracts are for one year with extensions available.

International Internship Programs

  • AIESEC - AIESEC is an international association of students working to build a better world through a variety of international work exchanges run between over 87 countries. These exchanges each attempt to have an impact on people by addressing five key topics: creating cultural understanding, building a learning society, globalizing the information society, developing entrepreneurs and helping make companies more socially responsible.
  • AIFS: American Institute for Foreign Study - AIFS offers internships in London through their Richmond College International Internship Program. Six weeks of classes at the Kensington campus introduces British culture and history and nine weeks are spent working in a public organization or private company. Placements are based on experience, major and interests. A six-week summer internship program is also available.

  • Casa De Espanol Xelaju - CEX's Project La Pedrera offers students and non-students a variety of internship and volunteer work opportunities with an underserved, indigenous community in Guatemala. A variety Spanish-speaking ability and lengths of stay are available. Opportunities include teaching English, math, computer classes, organizing projects and workshops, taking children on field trips, investigation surveys, statistical legal work, medical and dental clinic positions, building projects, domestic crisis internventions.

  • Center for Interim Programs - CIP matches client's interests with a database of over 2,400 nonacademic but structured opportunities worldwide (from art to zoology, Australia to Zimbabwe), many of which provide room and board. The Center has placed some 3,000 people between the ages fo 16 and 70 over the past 15 years. Placements are individual, so check with the organization for details and fees.
  • Hansard Scholars Programme - The Hansard Society for Parliamentary Government, in conjunction with the London School of Economics and the University of London, offers the opportunity for students to become involved in the workings of the British government and politics, accompanied by a comprehensive study of British politics and public policy. Students are mainly assigned internships with Members of Parliament, but also to political parties and think tanks.
  • INSTEP: Institute of Economic and Political Studies - INSTEP offers semester and academic year programs for juniors and seniors interested in politics, law, economics, political economy, contemporary Europe, the social sciences and the humanities in either London or Cambridge. Courses are in lecture or seminar format. Internships are available in business, economics, environment, law, politics, and social work.
  • International Partnership for Service Learning - IPSL offers programs which combine structured academic studies with substantial volunteer community service for a summer, semester or year in the Czech Republic, Ecuador, England, France, India, Israel, Jamaica, Mexico, the Philippines and Scotland. Placements are available in areas such as English, foreign languages, history, languages, psychology, political science, social ecology, sociology and the social sciences and are individualized based on the student's needs and interests. Programs are based at recognized degree granting institutions in the host country, involve 20 hours of service per week, and have an in-country resident director to assist students.
  • Internships International - Offers internships in Chile, France, Germany, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Mexico, Spain, and the United Kingdom. The placements are profession, full-time, non-paying positions and are open to recent college graduates and current graduate students in all fields. There are often opportunities to also secure a part-time paying job.
  • Lexia Exchange International - LEXIA offers summer and semester academic programs with a research component in Argentina, the Czech Republic, Germany, Hong Kong, Hungary, Italy, Poland, and South Africa. Classes are taught in English, but intensive language is required during the first phase of the program. A multi-disciplinary course introduces the history, politics, economics, geography and culture of the host country. Students then pursue an independent, well-defined field research project during the second phase of the program. Internships are also available.
  • Syracuse University - SU offers a wide variety of internships and field placements at their study centers in France, Italy, Spain, the UK and Zimbabwe as well as Hong Kong, Singapore, and Switzerland. Internships are available in areas such as communications, drama, business, law, international relations, management, political science and social services.
  • University of Haifa Internships - The Department of Overseas Studies at the University of Haifa in Israel offers internship experiences, coupled with a semester of study, in a variety of fields, among them education, social work, immigrant absorption, the physical sciences, women's studies, Jewish-Arab relations, and international finance. They are open to qualified students who have successfully completed at least two full years of academic study. Academic credit is available.
  • University of Rochester - UR sponsors semester-long programs in Belgium, France, Germany, Spain, and the UK that are administered by Educational Programs Abroad (EPA). The London internships are also available in summer. The internships carry eight credit hours and students also take two courses carrying four credits each. Internships are open to students majoring in a wide variety of fields. You do not need a specialized background to apply for most internships.
